The part most homeowners don't find out until a court fails: Northern Utah's freeze-thaw cycling and the Wasatch Front's expansive lakebed clay soils are what actually crack a backyard court, not the surface paint. Water in a slab's pores freezes, expands, and pulls the concrete apart over repeated cycles, and a standard rebar slab is the single most common reason a court looks great for two winters and then opens cracks that show straight through the acrylic. Every court we build gets a post-tensioned slab as the base spec, because that's the accepted fix for exactly this problem, not a rebar-only job with a pricier slab offered as an add-on later.
